Madison Middle School

Working with Bassetti Architects, staff, and faculty, SB&A participated in the landscape renovation of the $40 million rehabilitation of the historic Madison Middle School in Seattle. Working with the architects, the staff and faculty, SB&A explored the historic significance of James Madison and brought his influence into the landscape. The design reflects the Madison/Montpelier home in Virginia. The original home’s formal parterre are reflected in the entry courtyard, and in the use of monumental trees such as the Tulip Poplar. An outdoor education area includes an amphitheater, and a Pacific Northwest native forest planting. The rooftop plaza is used by students for gatherings and lunch. The site also includes the redevelopment of the football field and a running track for students, staff and the neighborhood.
