Whidbey Island Residence

SB&A prepared a concept plan and began construction documentation for this 10-acre private residential site on Whidbey Island. Three acres in the center of the site were developed with a house, a guesthouse over the garage, planting terraces, a remote guesthouse and a water tower.
The planning team prepared several estate planning and site development alternatives using the Master Plan Goals which were established in the earliest stages of the planning and design process. These alternatives were evaluated by the family and a preferred alternative was selected for further development. The frame work of the Master Plan is derived from : 1) fully embracing site qualities in the plan structure, 2) locating the residence in the most supportive and enhancing place within the site, 3) discovering the integrative and home place making power of the circle and it’s derivative partner the spiral, and 4) responding to the goal of healing.
The garden will include a meadow/ orchard and a bowl organized by an encompassing spiral plan. The east edge of the bowl will be a long stone potting shed with a walkway connection leading to the house/garage. The main feature of the garden design is a rill and waterfall bisecting a bowl-shaped space with a splash pool adjacent to a large patio for entertaining and relaxation.
